Hello, my name is Jake Elston and I am from Pickerington, Ohio. I currently am a student at Bowling Green State University(BGSU), majoring in media production with a minor in journalism. My dream job would be to work for either ESPN or FoxSports to make documentaries portraying the outside life of professional athletes. Sports have always been something that I have enjoyed watching and participating throughout my life, and when choosing a college to attend, BGSU was at the top of my list for the outstanding hands-on opportunities I could be getting. An internship opportunity that I am about to embark upon in the upcoming summer is for the Columbus Clippers, who are a minor league baseball team near my hometown. I am hoping to help them in any way that I can and hopefully get even more experience as to what it takes to work in the professional field of sports.
Some of the organizations that I have been a part of with my time at BGSU are the men’s club volleyball team, BGRSO (radio sports organization), and a member of Falcon Media. For the club volleyball team I accepted the role of presidency this past year, and it allowed me take on more responsibility of scheduling tournaments, balancing a budget, and coming up with fundraising opportunities. For both BGRSO and Falcon Media, they have both allowed me to get a feel as to the process that goes into broadcasting and covering a sporting event. Those organizations not only have allowed me to make lifelong friends, but they have also given me the opportunity to take on leadership roles to further advance myself in my career field.
In my down time, you could probably find me at the union watching Netflix, playing volleyball outside or inside, or in the Khulin Center working on my next video project. Some of my favorite shows to watch on Netflix would include Black Mirror, How to Get Away with Murder, and The Office. For most of my projects that I end up doing, they are generally sports related. These could either be interviews with players or of me covering a BG related sporting event. One of my favorite events that I got to cover was for the BGSU basketball game vs. Buffalo this past year where there was a record crowd of over 5,000 people at the game. The best advice I could give to anybody in college would be to get involved as soon as possible, it really gives you the best opportunity at figuring out what you want to do for the rest of your life.
